You may not know this, but when I was a kid, I never dreamed that my voice might become my calling card.
In fact, I remember when I was a teenager and one of my younger brother's friends met me for the first time.
He was like, "You're the same sister who answers the phone?" I was puzzled by the question until he said,
"Your voice is so deep. I thought you'd be kind of beast."
And then he broke out in hysterical laughter.
Over the years, other people remarked upon how my voice was deep or "different" "for a girl," and the implication was always that my voice was not okay.
So you can imagine how self-conscious I was.
I even hated the sound of my voice.
